*TIPS*..... dvd’s vs. cd’s -- The dvd’s are
better to work with because the reflective material doesn’t flake off
like it does on cd’s. The dvd’s are two-ply, so you need to do
something to seal the edges to keep them together once you’ve
cut them down. The copper foil tape does the trick when soldering
your pieces together. Can also use clear fingernail polish or other
acrylic varnish around the edges for other art/jewelry projects.
Soak dvd’s/cd’s in near boiling water for a
couple of minutes before cutting. This will make them more
pliable, easier to cut and eliminate any cracking or breakage.

the process:
Cut your dvd/cd’s into desired shapes.
Sand edges to smooth and shape.
Seal with clear nail polish
or other
acrylic varnish.
Play up dvd artwork elements, if any.
Layer your pieces. Use the center as a ‘frame’.
(If soldering, wrap the edges of your shapes with copper foil
tape. Burnish the tape down with a credit card to smooth and
insure adhesion. Flux tape and cover with solder, by heating with
soldering iron. Remember, your’re working with plastic, so don’t
hold your soldering iron in one place for too long. Clean off
flux residue with household ammonia.)
Arrange pieces into desired jewelry fashion. Drill holes using
1/16” drill bit to connect with jump rings and such, or use
heavy duty hole punch and eyelets to connect.
Pieces can be used as pendants and charms and turned into
necklaces, earrings and bracelets.
Experiment with different designs.
Wear proudly. |
