*TIPS*..... dvd’s vs. cd’s -- The dvd’s are better to work with because the reflective material doesn’t flake off like it does on cd’s. The dvd’s are two-ply, so you need to do something to seal the edges to keep them together once you’ve cut them down. The copper foil tape does the trick when soldering your pieces together. Can also use clear fingernail polish or other acrylic varnish around the edges for other art/jewelry projects. Soak dvd’s/cd’s in near boiling water for a couple of minutes before cutting. This will make them more pliable, easier to cut and eliminate any cracking or breakage. |

the
process:
Lay out desired mosaic pattern/design. Cut your dvd/cd’s into desired shapes. Play up the half disc to create pinwheels, flowers, etc. Can use the reflective side, the artwork side, or a combination of the two in your design. Work in a small area at a time. Apply a thin layer of chosen adhesive/grout and start adding your cut dvd/cd pieces. Once dry, clean off pieces with rubbing alcohol. |
