*TIPS*.....
dvd’s vs. cd’s -- The dvd’s are better to work with because the
reflective material doesn’t flake off like it does on cd’s. The dvd’s
are two-ply, so you need to do something to seal the edges to keep them
together once you’ve
cut them down. The copper foil tape does the trick with this
ornament project. Can also use clear fingernail polish or other acrylic
varnish for other art/jewelry projects.
Soak dvd’s/cd’s in near boiling water for a
couple of minutes before cutting. This will make them more
pliable, easier to cut and eliminate any cracking or breakage.

the process:
Cut your dvd/cd’s into triangle shapes.
Wrap the edges of your triangle shapes with copper foil
tape. Burnish the tape edges with the edge
of a credit card to smooth and insure adhesion.
Arrange five triangles into a star shape.
Apply flux to your copper tape to prepare for solder.
Start by soldering the points where each star meets to hold
together. Continue soldering over all foil tape areas - front
and back. Solder a jump ring to the top for hanging.
Fill in the center with gems or beads wrapped in copper foil tape and
solder to the star.
Clean off flux residue with
household ammonia.
Experiment with different
shapes.
Hang and enjoy. |
