The backside of linoleum can be transformed
into colorful indoor/outdoor throw rugs, table coverings, pet/door/bar
mats, placemats and more!
materials
-roll of linoleum - 6x9, 9x15
rolls can be found at most home improvement stores
-can also shop flooring stores
for remnants left over from installs
-heavy duty shears or utility
knife
-latex primer
-paint (house paints, artist
acrylics, sprays...use what you have!)
-polyurethane
-silica sand/play sand (if using
linoleum for outdoor rugs)
-your imagination

cut linoleum to desired size (tip: lay unrolled linoleum in the
sun to help flatten, if needed)
flip over to work on the BACKSIDE - prime with latex primer
lay out design/pattern using pencil, tape, or stencils
paint design/pattern
seal with 3 coats of polyurethane - if using outside, be
sure to get exterior grade polyurethane
FOR OUTDOOR RUGS ONLY: while first coat of
polyurethane is wet, lightly sprinkle
silica sand or play sand over rug to prevent rug from
being slippery when wet. don’t overdo
it, a light sprinkling is sufficient.

this material makes beautiful
covers for patio umbrella
tables
just flip table over onto linoleum,
trace and cut. remember to cut out
opening for umbrella.
experiment with embellishments
such as grommets, rock weights, etc.
tip: when using for indoor rug, place
rug backing on underside to prevent
slipping.
play around with using the linoleum
for game mats and play mats.
